SAFSF Executive Director

Virginia Clarke joined the Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems Funders in January 2003. She came to SAFSF from the University of California's systemwide office for the Education Abroad Program where she served as a Senior Analyst and Regional Director Assistant for Asia and Africa, coordinating university-level student exchanges.

From 1995 – 2000, Virginia worked for the Salzburg Seminar in Salzburg, Austria where she was a program director and coordinated the Seminar's outreach to Latin America. While at the Seminar, she directed programs for emerging world leaders on a wide array of issues including food security, sustainable agriculture, international non-governmental organizations, leadership, and various legal themes. Other learning/employment opportunities over the last thirty years have included a stint at the World Bank; a management reorganization for a private clothing manufacturer in Bolivia; assisting immigrants in their efforts to secure legal residency in the U.S.; and creating/running a restitution project for juvenile offenders in Western Massachusetts.

Fluent in Spanish, Virginia has a Masters in International Administration from the School for International Training and a B.A. with honors in Spanish from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She has lived and worked in seven U.S. states as well as in Spain, Bolivia, Mexico, and Austria. She currently lives with her 13 year old daughter in Santa Barbara, California where she tends a small – sometimes thriving – organic garden.
