ABOUT THE REGION
Spokane (pronounced “Spo-CAN”) is the second largest city in Washington state and the third largest urban area in the Pacific Northwest. With nearly 500,000 residents in Spokane County, the metropolitan region is a cultural and economic hub for the Inland Northwest.
Spokane is named after the Spokane tribe, who – along with many other members of the Interior Salish group, including the Kalispel, Colville, Coeur d’Alene, and other tribal nations – lived on and respected millions of acres of land in the Inland Northwest for thousands of years.
Spokane has a lively food, beer, and wine scene (read about it in this Food & Wine article); a vibrant and walkable downtown; and many opportunities for outdoor recreation.
Washington farmers produce more than 300 different commodities, and the Inland Northwest region is a hotspot for agriculture and agribusiness. Just south of Spokane, Whitman County leads not only the state, but the nation, in wheat sales, and is the top producer in the state – and one of the top in the U.S. – for barley and dry edible beans. The greater Palouse region is also a key producer of pulses, including chickpeas and lentils. Click here to see an infographic about agriculture in Washington state.

WHAT TO DO
The Historic Davenport Hotel is located in the heart of Spokane’s historic and walkable downtown. Many local restaurants, wineries, breweries, parks, shopping, and arts venues are located just steps from the hotel.
The 100-acre Riverfront Park is only a short walk from the Forum hotel, and offers scenic Spokane River views. The nearly 40-mile long Centennial Trail runs through downtown Spokane’s Riverfront Park, offering an opportunity to run, walk, or bike for miles from west of Spokane to the Idaho border (and into Coeur d’Alene on the connecting North Idaho Centennial trail).
The Inland Northwest is home to more than 40 local breweries (tour them all on the Inland Northwest Ale Trail!), and more than 20 wineries and tasting rooms — with more than a dozen in the downtown Spokane area alone. Restaurant list coming soon!
Trying to visit all 50 states, or just an outdoors aficionado? Spokane is less than an hour’s drive from Idaho and less than 2 hours away from Montana. Get to the British Columbia border in 2.5 hours, or round out your Forum experience with a short road trip to Banff National Park (about 350 miles away).
